Easy and Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Feeling rushed in the morning and need some ideas to get a healthy breakfast on the table (or in your kids’ hands) before you start your busy day ? Here are some easy breakfast ideas!

When making simple swaps in your kitchen for a healthier lifestyle, breakfast is a great place to start.

Cereal is easy but when you read the ingredient list on many boxes you likely will want to put them back on the shelf and rethink what you are filling yourself (and your kids) with.

Things to Consider About a Breakfast Meal

How Easy It Is to Make

This is probably the most important aspect of a breakfast meal because you likely don’t have time to do a huge prep and then cleanup for breakfast. You want food that’s easy to grab and dishes that can go straight into the dishwasher.

Bacon, eggs and pancakes probably won’t make your rushed Tuesday morning any easier!

What Your Family Will Actually Eat

Picky eaters are the next thing to consider. It doesn’t matter how easy the meal is, if your kid (or husband or you) won’t eat it then you’ve wasted your time!

Make a list of foods you know your family will eat and start looking for simple swaps you can make.

Consider Ingredient Alternatives

Think about how you can add or remove things from your breakfast meal. Simple swaps like whole wheat bread instead of white bread, purreed cottage cheese instead of cream cheese, no sugar added yogurt sweetened with honey or pure maple syrup.

Simple Swaps Can Mean Smaller Portions

If your family is stuck on cereal, continue giving them a bowl of cereal but make it smaller and add more nutritious items to their meal. Things like homemade smoothies, yogurt or toast with peanut butter!

Easy and Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Freezer - the freezer is your friend when it comes to easy breakfasts. Most of the time if you plan ahead, make a big batch of something and freeze it, then you can pull it out the night before to eat for breakfast!

Oatmeal - Instant oats are quick and easy. Even large flake oats don’t take that much longer to cook! They can be done on the stove or in a microwave and are so versatile you don’t have to eat the same flavour of oats everyday! Grab more oatmeal inspiration here.

Baked oatmeal is another great option. Make at the start of the week, freeze and pull out the night before to enjoy cold or warmed up in the morning.

Yogurt - Yogurt is incredibly healthy and if you grab Greek or Skyr varieties of yogurt you will get a protein boost with your meal. Add chopped banana, granola or other fruit to top it off!

Smoothies - The great thing about homemade smoothies is you can sneak extra veggies (like spinach, carrots or broccoli) into them and no one will know!

Start with a basic base (frozen fruit, banana and milk of choice) then start adding things. Yogurt, flax seeds, veggies, cottage cheese, kefir, protein powder…the list is almost endless. Make a big batch so everyone can get a cupful before they head out the door! For more ideas on how to make a smoothie check out this post.

Toast - Opt for whole wheat, sourdough or rye bread! Then top with peanut butter and honey, peanut butter and jam, cottage cheese, avacado, boiled egg…you get the idea!

Eggs - Boil a pot of eggs at the beginning of the week and put them in the fridge so you can have eggs for breakfast! Fried eggs or scrambled eggs are also a quick option in the morning.

You also can make egg bakes, quiches or frittatas ahead of time to freeze and pull out for breakfast.

Homemade muffins or bars - Bake muffins or breakfast bars at the beginning of the week and freeze them. Take them out the night before for an easy “grab and go” breakfast!

Pancakes & French Toast - Make up a batch, freeze it and pull them out the night before to warm and eat in the morning.

Breakfast can feel rushed but with easy options ready for you and your family, you can enjoy a healthy meal before you tackle your day!
